PS Bitok Rallies Nation to Embrace Competency-Based Education for a Future-Ready Generation

The Principal Secretary (PS) for Education Prof (Amb) Julius Bitok has called on all stakeholders and partners in the education sector to approach the Competency-Based Education (CBE) framework with an open mind, emphasizing its potential to equip learners with the skills, knowledge, and values needed to thrive in the 21st Century economy.

Speaking at the national conversation on the Competency Based Education dialogue held Thursday April 24, 2025 at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), PS Bitok reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the successful implementation of CBE through the Ministry of Education.

“The future of our children’s education rests squarely on our collective shoulders,” said Mr. Bitok. “I urge all stakeholders to actively participate in similar dialogues, provide honest feedback, and contribute to shaping education policies that serve the best interests of every learner.”

Prof. Bitok lauded the educators, parents, and learners present, noting that the forum provided a valuable platform for gathering grassroots-level insights into the practical realities of CBE implementation.

Cabinet Secretary for Education, Julius Migos Ogamba, also addressed the forum, announcing a key policy shift regarding Senior School education. Based on the discussions held during the event, mathematics will now be a compulsory subject for all students at the Senior School level. He said that the Ministry will establish a technical team, working in collaboration with the Kenya Institute for Curriculum Development, to determine effective strategies for implementing this change.

“As all of us can agree, we have in the past two years done well in implementing some of the Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms’ recommendations, and we promise to do even better going forward,” said CS Ogamba. “We are confident that Kenya will achieve quality, accessible, and equitable education for all learners.”

The dialogue brought together a broad cross-section of stakeholders from across the country, with objectives that included: Validating the alignment of the Senior School curriculum with societal and industry needs, Informing stakeholders about developments in teacher recruitment, professional development, and learning materials and gathering feedback to inform policy adjustments and enhance the effectiveness of CBE.

By prioritizing inclusivity and continued engagement, the Ministry aims to ensure education reforms reflect the aspirations of all Kenyans.
