Ministry Launches the 5th Cycle ISO certificate

The implementation of ISO standards reflects the Ministry’s commitment to delivering quality education services and fostering an environment of excellence, accountability, and continuous improvement.

Speaking during the launch at CEMASTEA in Nairobi, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba said ISO standards are internationally recognized frameworks that ensure consistency, quality, and efficiency across sectors. He noted that the decision to adopt these standards was strategic, driven by the Ministry’s leadership to improve performance and service delivery. “For the Ministry of Education, ISO implementation is not just a procedural task, but a transformative endeavour.” Said Hon. Ogamba

In 2010, the Kenyan government issued a directive requiring all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to adopt ISO 9001:2008 standards. This initiative aimed to enhance service delivery and promote a culture of continuous improvement. The directive, formalized through Circular Ref. No. OP/CAB.9/1A, set clear timelines for ISO certification, marking a key step in improving public sector efficiency and accountability.

The Ministry of Education, adoption of ISO standards was an opportunity to standardize operations, improve service quality, and align processes with globally recognized best practices. Internal operations have been streamlined to reduce redundancies and enhance service delivery. Feedback mechanisms have been introduced to address the needs of all stakeholders. Noted Ogamba in his speech

Evidently, there’s been notable improvements in policy and system enhancements, capacity building through extensive training, and increased ability to monitor and evaluate performance. This has not only enhanced the Ministry’s credibility but also strengthened collaboration with development partners. The coordination of key education programs such as Free Primary Education and Free Day Secondary Education has improved. Mr Ogamba observed that ISO standards have helped automate functions like student placement and examination management and improve infrastructure planning and execution.

“ISO implementation has played a significant role in helping the Ministry achieve its Performance Contract targets. By embedding quality management principles into our operations, streamlining service delivery and cultivated a culture of accountability and continuous improvement which has led to improved efficiency, monitoring and evaluation, data-driven decision-making, and better stakeholder engagement. The education leader called for continued collaboration to develop an education system that meets international standards, setting a benchmark for public sector reforms.

The Cabinet Secretary appreciated Principal Secretaries, Directorate Heads, the ISO implementation team, and the entire Ministry staff for their commitment, collaboration, and effort to lay a firm foundation of a brighter future for learners and the nation
